How to Play Frugby
- Essentially, we're all just here to have fun so play clean, show good sportsmanship and be friendly.
- Referees are all-powerful. They can deduct or add downs, deduct or add points, and remove players. Stay on their good side...
- No intentional blocking or screening
- No diving over people
- No flag guarding (swatting peoples hands away when they reach for your flag; or holding onto your flag while someone attempts to remove it)
- Games are played as two 20 minute halves with a short water break for half-time (the clock does not stop during the halves)
- Each team gets 3 one-minute time-outs
- 7 players per team on the field with a minimum of 3 ladies
- Cannot run four plays in a row that utilize only guys
- Teams earn two bonus points when a girl scores a touchdown (if she runs it in)
- Quarterback may not run with the ball (QB has 10 seconds to get rid of the ball or result in loss of down)
- Defense may not rush the quarterback, but can press forward on a handoff
- Cannot use the same person for quarterback for more than one half
- No dirty tricks such as shouting at receivers in an attempt to startle them from making a catch
- Can't strip the ball or recover a fumble, but you can intercept a pass or lateral
- No contact (incidental contact will certainly occur, but blatant contact will be penalized and belligerent contact may result in immediate banishment from all Sportsball leagues)
Simplified Rules
- This is a pretty intuitive game once you start playing. It's basically school-yard ultimate frisbee, except we use a rugby ball instead of a frisbee. Why a rubgy ball, you ask? Because frisbees require a special level of skill to throw and catch that we don't want the entire game to be based around so we use a ball that is incredibly simple to catch but pretty difficult to throw. This levels the field and encourages quick passes that involves everyone on the field.
-
There is no forward progress to be made once the ball is caught other than to slow your self down from a run or to pivot. You have 5 seconds to get rid of it after you've come to a stop.
- There is no blocking the thrower. You have to stay at least two-arms lengths away from the person throwing or kicking the ball. It's not basketball. It's more like football and you can pretend the thrower is behind an invisible line of scrimmage. You must block the receivers if you want to thwart progress.
- If there is an incomplete pass, or an interception, or a catch out-of-bounds, or if the ball is held longer than 5-seconds, then the play results in an immediate turnover. This is a fast moving game. There are no huddles or dead-plays. Just keep chucking.
Scoring
- Catching the ball within the endzone results in a point. You can't run the ball in. It only results in a point if the ball is caught within the endzone - up to the discretion of the referee.
- Sometimes, we have a hoop beyond the endzone that you may attempt to throw or kick the ball through for a 5-point score. This attempt must be made before reaching the endzone.
All your questions:
- How long are games? - About an hour
- Can I kick the ball instead of throwing it? - You bet
- How do subs work? We can be flexible the the amount of folks on the field on each side. Teams will agree on an amount of players that leaves adequate subs for each team. There is a lot of running, so expect to sub out often like a hockey game.
